The St. Louis Cardinals, a perennial contender in recent years in Major League Baseball, has roots that stretch far back into the history of professional baseball. These roots have provided them with a foundation to build on, paving the way for their success in Major League Baseball today.
The franchise initially began in 1882. They were not always known as the St. Louis Cardinals however. In their founding they were called the St. Louis Brown Stockings. This team managed to show success early and often. In their first decade as a team they already had done amazing things, such as winning 4 AA(American Association) pennants consecutively.
Within a few years, the organization joined the National League. This league is the league that the St. Louis Cardinals still take part in.
The Cardinals were critical in the development of talent in Major League Baseball. In the early 1920's the Cardinals, led by Branch Rickey, developed a minor league feeder team. This feeder team allowed players to develop and come to the National League prepared to take on the higher level of talent.
In the 1920s the Cardinals saw a lot of success. Much of this success can be attributed to Rogers Hornsby. Hornsby is one of the legends in Major League Baseball history. In the 1920's he managed to win the Triple Crown twice. The Triple Crown is an achievement where a player leads the league in batting average, homeruns, and runs batted in. This achievement helped the Cardinals to win the National League pennant for the first time in 1926 and to beat the Yankees in the World Series that same year. This marked their first of many successes in St. Louis.
The successes of the Cardinals continued, as they managed to win two more World Series titles in the 1930s. The 1930s passed, but with the coming of the 1940s, the Cardinals continued to have success. In the 1930s the Cardinals won three more World Series Championships. The last of the decade took place in 1946.
After 1946 the Cardinals experienced a long drought in their success. In the entire decade of the 1950s the Cardinals failed to win a World Series or even a National League Pennant. We know, however, that this stop in success could not last.
In the 1960s the Cardinals bounced back. They managed to win the NL Pennant three times in the 60s, including two years where they won the World Series Title. The success of the Cardinals reached another stopping point after the 60s, but managed to crawl out of their issues after about 15 years. The 80s brought more success to the Cardinals, winning 3 pennants and a World Series title.
Today the Cardinals have managed to be successful again. The Cardinals have won 2 pennants in the last decade, including in 2006 where they won the World Series title. This World Series title helped the Cardinals to overcome a streak of 24 years without winning the World Series. The Cardinals are led today by one of the greatest hitters of this generation in Albert Pujols and have an excellent pitching staff.
