The convoy was initially accompanied by a local escort group, and joined later by the ocean escort of convoy JW 55A, out of Murmansk. When Ransome Wallis returned to the wounded he tried to rig a drip into the sailor with a fractured spine but when another attack began the sailor pulled out the needle and resisted when he was being tied down to administer the drip, leading Ransome Wallis to stop. Kendal lost sight of the BV 138 in cloud and attacked a Ju 88, chasing it along the length of the convoy before firing two long bursts of machine-gun fire. Despite good visibility, Convoy QP 12 was not spotted by a German reconnaissance aircraft until 25 May. During the voyage JW 55B was approached by a German force centred on the battleship Scharnhorst; no contact was made with the convoy, but Scharnhorst was sunk, in the Battle of the North Cape, by the battleship HMS Duke of York, a handful of Royal Navy light surface combatants, and Norwegian destroyer HNoMS Stord.
